I use the term “Legacy Email” to describe Internet email as almost everyone uses it today. If we collectively accomplish that, it will have a positive knock-on effect as people start asking you “how did you get that cool red ribbon icon on your email?” You will point them to this post, and together we will get more people on S/MIME. If you agree with the ‘why’ and I manage to de-mystify the ‘what’ and ‘how’, I believe many of you will do the modest amount of due diligence and work to bring up S/MIME. Next, I will provide a primer on what S/MIME does and how it does it. I will begin with a strong case that all of us should be using S/MIME. Stuff would happen, some of you would end up frustrated and in the process I would undermine my objective: getting a whole bunch of people using S/MIME. I have since recognized that would be a disaster, for both me and you. Implicit in the above quote-honestly, my intention when I wrote that sentence-was that I would give directions for setting up S/MIME on one or two popular email platforms. In the interest of full transparency, this is NOT said post.
